Food and water borne infections are the number one problem associated with international travel. Infectious agents, primarily bacteria but also viruses and parasites are responsible for travelers’ diarrhea.

The typical symptoms of travelers diarrhea (TD) are diarrhea, nausea, bloating, urgency and malaise which usually last 3 to 7 days. The best way to prevent TD is by paying meticulous attention to the choice of food and beverages. Center for Disease Control does not recommend the routine use of antibiotics to prevent TD, because they can cause additional problems themselves. Antidiarrheals and antibiotics are however indicated for the treatment of this condition. Consult International Travelers’ Clinic for prescriptions and doses schedule.
