Also known as lockjaw, is caused by bacteria whose spores are found in soil. If the spores enter a deep wound beyond the reach of oxygen from the air, they germinate and produce a toxin which interferes with the nerves controlling the muscles. Tetanus is a quite serious disease often leading to death especially in small children and elderly people. Active immunization is vital for everyone. It is usually given to children as part of the D.T.P. with booster shots (Adult Tcl) every 10 years (5 years for travelers), or at the time of an injury or laceration.
