The eradication of small pox is a success story of modern medicine. As late as 1967, when the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a global campaign to eliminate this disease, outbreaks still occurred regularly in many countries. After 10 years of effort, this international campaign was successful and the disease was eradicated. Small Pox vaccination is no longer necessary.
