Also known as Poliomyelitis (or infantile paralysis) is an acute viral disease marked by inflammation of nerve cells in the spinal cord accompanied by fever and at times paralysis and atrophy (wasting) of muscles. Polio is nearly eradicated from the Western Hemisphere (although a Dutch polio outbreak occurred in 1992-1993) Polio is often considered a disease of infants and children, but adults are also at risk. 2 types of vaccines are available: oral live trivalent vaccine (Sabin or OPV) and inactivated killed virus (Salk or IPV). In the United States, Centers for Disease Control recommended recently not to use oral Polio Vaccine anymore except in special situations
