Is an acute bacterial infection of the central nervous system that attacks the membranes (meninges) of the brain. Meningitis is a medical emergency and is most dangerous in infants and elderly persons. It may be rapidly fatal if not treated promptly with appropriate antibiotics. A mennigococcal vaccine is available which gives protection to high risk people such as military recruits and travelers to areas where outbreaks are reported.
