Diseases > See Immunization > HEPATITIS B
Is caused by a virus and is the most important type of hepatitis because of its potential severity and widespread occurrence worldwide. It is usually spread by contact with infected blood or other body fluids. There is a 0. I% to I% risk of death with acute infection and 5% of infected adults do become chronic carriers of the virus capable of infecting others. They are also at risk for the development of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. 2 vaccines are available in the United States: ENGERIX-B and RECOMBIVAX-HB, both of which are genetically engineered vaccines derived from yeast. ENGERIX-B is usually better suited for travelers than Recombivax-HB as 3 doses can be given on in accelerated schedule over a 2 month period.
